Default Energy Independence, Can We Do It?

I wasn't sure what the appropriate sub-forum was to place this in, so I thought I'd try here.

What do y'all think, can we, if we REALLY tried, get ourselves COMPLETELY off of foreign oil and all it's attendant pitfalls and uncertainties.

Every president since Nixon has asserted we're too dependent on foreign oil but has one administration, congress or anyone REALLY got beyond admitting the obvious and set to work out a program or plan to do so? HELL NO!! And that makes this Owl pretty ticked off! What stupidity and short-sightedness. How much longer can we let Arab countries twist our arm? What will it take to make us wake up?

I've gotta take my hat off to Brazil on this front, they actually had the guts to do something about it!

Sweden's even taking noticeable steps:

So, back here, we've got people diving into bio-diesel, ethanol, fuel-cells, hydrogen and such, yet these bozo oil companies and our own short-sighted politicians just don't grasp the seriousness of it.

Will it take a stringent piece of legislation to get us in gear and tell Saudi Arabia and the rest of them to take a flying leap? (on a sidenote, with a few exceptions, I've long been in favor of cutting off ALL relations with most Arab countries, ESPECIALLY Saudi Arabia, after all, those bastards financed and supported so much of the terroism and they should be HARSHLY punished for it!) I don;t think it'll happen in my lifetime, but I'd LOVE to see us tell SA in a gigantic way to take a flying leap while we become independent of their oil cartel's whims.

So, what y'all think? Can we do it?
