What destroyed the GOP was the shift away from conservative values. As soon as the money grab started the points of difference between the GOP and Democrat Party dulled.

I do think there are major differences in the parties, but GOP is substantially weaker. These things tend to by cyclical though and if I was the Dem's I certainly wouldn't sit on my laurels.
