Am I the only one who finds the second incident in the original post utterly astonishing?

US uniforms, weapons and vehicles? English speaking/American impersonating?

US military say the militants bypassed(?!?) Iraqi police to reach their goal.

Who the hell are these people who are able to pass unhindered into a government compound, start a fight, take captives and make good their escape?

A senior Iraqi military official said the sophistication of the attack led him to believe it was the work of Iranian intelligence agents in conjunction with Iraq's Shiite Mahdi Army militia

The audacity and success suggests to me `special forces`. Does the Mahdi Army have `special forces`? Is it a co-incidence that this rather dramatic increase in the abilities of the insurgents is demonstrated so soon after the US began targeting Iranian officials in Iraq? Possibly the American seizure of Iranian personnel and this attack might indicate a new and dangerous escalation in the conflict.
JP`s (oft-repeated) assertion that attacks such as this justify prisoner abuse is very strange though.
