I would like to begin by saying that I am strongly against drug use. However, I would like to address the following issue. Paruresis or shy bladder syndrome affects more than 17 million people. However, this condition is ignored by the government as a real issue. It is believed that these people are born with a trigger much like a diver’s reflex which instinctively does not allow them to urinate in public. However, these people are still urged to take urine drug tests and then are accused of being drug users if they are unable.

The truth is that if these people were really on drugs- they would refuse to take any form of drug test and this is not the case. It is time to allow options in the type of drug test administered. Furthermore, studies have shown hair drug tests to be more effective in detecting drug use. However, companies do not want to pay the slight increased cost of these tests.

I am sure that it is rough for those with it. But like any phobia, you treat it and get on with your life.

I have to agree. It's like for instance, Arachnaphobia (fear of Spiders), you can't go on a full-blown medication forefront to beat it. It's built within your system and no amount of medication will ever stop you from fearing Spiders -- especially if you watch "Eight legged Freaks." I'm sure it's not exactly plesant for those with it, but it's not a physical problem -- it's a mental illness.

Yup, you can not exactly treat it with medicine. But it can still be treated. It can still be overcome.

It could be possible to overcome but for some it is a reaction just like a pupillary light reflex. When alternative measures exist, it isnt necessary to require someone to attempt to overcome something which could prove impossible.

I don't think the bladder thing is as easy to "overcome" as a phobia like arachnophobia.
I have arachnophobia... and I can kill a spider. I can probably even force myself to enter a spider-filled room for something important...
But the fear does not go away. I'm still scared of the (*)(*)(*)(*) things.

The problem with this particular bladder problem is that the response to the fear is the lock-up of a bodily function that isn't normally controlled in as conscious a manner as, say, walking into a room. Remember, it's relaxation that releases waste... not action, as like running into a room full of spiders.
When you are afraid you may be able to make yourself run or fight... but relax? Doubtful.
