Default Where should a president draw the line?

It's clear that the current president doesn't make any distinction between issues that should remain in the domain of personal conviction versus those requiring government involvement. He seems to be using his position to impose his personal "values" on the country. Two of the most obvious issues that come to mind are gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research.

So if people feel these issues require specific legislation, fine, then where should the line otherwise be drawn? Does this president draw ANY line? I can think of nothing that would give me more respect for a leader than to hear him/her say the words "look, this is what I believe in and will stand up for by the way I live my life, but it is not a matter for government to decide."
