Car blast slays 18 elite soldiers
February 15, 2007
TEHRAN:
Eighteen members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards were killed yesterday when a car loaded with explosives blew up near the bus taking them to work in the country's southeast. The car stopped at about 6.30am (2pm AEDT) in front of the bus on the outskirts of Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan Province. The car's occupants fled on motorbikes seconds before the car exploded, the Islamic Republic News Agency said last night. It called the attack in the Ahmadabad district a terrorist operation. "This blind terrorist operation led to the martyrdom of 18 citizens of Zahedan," IRNA quoted a Guards commander Qasem Rezaei, as saying.
The Sunni militant group Jundallah (Soldiers of God) claimed responsibility for the attack, which Brigadier General Rezaei blamed on "insurgents and elements of insecurity". A statement attributed to Jundallah on a website said the attack was a "response to the recent executions" of militants found guilty of bombings in the southwestern Khuzestan province. Jundallah has been blamed in recent months for a string of armed incidents along Iran's borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
