Default Finland: A Plan for ‘Love Vacations’

Finland: A Plan for ‘Love Vacations’

By BLOOMBERG NEWS
Published: April 17, 2008

A proposed bill before Parliament would grant Finnish workers, already entitled to 25 paid days of vacation a year and as many as 10 paid public holidays, one more week of “love vacation” to reduce, its sponsor said, a high divorce rate and revive passion in a population whose workdays are growing longer. The measure would allow Finns to connect “on an erotic as well as an emotional level,” Tommy Tabermann, a poet, actor and member of the Social Democrats, said in a speech introducing the measure last month. To get to a vote, his proposal needs the backing of 100 members, or half, of Parliament. It now has 13 signatures. Some lawmakers suggested that the idea might get more support if the leave were unpaid. “People can take love vacations but shouldn’t be paid for them,” said Bjarne Kallis, the head of the Christian Democrat delegation. “You have a lot of free time already today.”

The low level of reproduction in the Scandinavian countries and in Europe in general, is a problem. This might be a partial solution.

I misundertood you, my bad.

As far as abortion goes, I don't think that's the answer to help the low level of reproduction. The thing is, women these days choose to have their first baby quite late. I read a while back that the average age of the women who choose to have their first baby in Stockholm is 36. Remember by the time the women has hit 30, her fertility is already declining. So the older the women gets, the faster it plummets. Which leaves us with 2 children/ women, if that.

it certainly wouldnt hurt the population problem. and remember that each of those babies can grow up and have babies of thier own.

thats the problem though. a population cant grow if each woman has tow children. ther has to be more than that. if each woman has 2 children that means that half will be boys and half will be girls. at that rate, the population will stay the same because for every mother that dies theres only one girl to take her place to give birth. if every mother gives birth to only one child, the population will be cut in half with each generation until it dies off. if the nother gives birth to 3 children, the population will grow by 50% with each generation. the only options you have is to either stop abortions or make more babies, or both.

How is the stable population in Scandinavia a problem? The only people who seem 'concerned' are conservatives with their 'POPULATE OR PERISH!' mentality. Overpopulation brings strain on society and impoverishes the nation, Scandinavian countries have great state-funded social systems of welfare etc, and having a stable and controllable birth rate means that this social system isn't put under economic strain.

You see, unlike America where the the logic is 'BREED MORE!!!' which just causes more poverty, Europe has a plan for sustainable growth and shared and equal prosperity.

Get out of the 19th century mindset, having a big population is not a good thing anymore, what is best is having a small skilled population under a welfare-state and not a horde of unskilled labor fresh for big business to exploit till they drop dead - like America. Europe is far more compassionate than America in this way, while America is brutal and uncaring in it's cold economic calculations for profits for the few while the many suffer.
