Welcome to capitalism, where all imagery is eventually used to sell something. Or haven't you noticed the use of the flag, National Anthem, Statue of Liberty, Washington crossing the Delaware, etc. to sell everything under the sun?

The emoition it's tapping belongs for those Marines and all those that fell that day. It doesn't belong to a company trying to turn a buck.
It belongs to America -- the *country* that sacrificed in many ways, large and small, so that that flag could be raised on that day.

An America that is not served by making everything military an off-limits relic. The military should be respected because it has earned our respect; which is why I would be offended by a use of the image that disrespected the military.

But it should not be fetishized.

Besides, I'd rather see the image used in popular culture so that people recognize it, instead of becoming the oh-so-proper-but-largely-forgotten province of military history buffs.

And once again, apparently it does.

I don't have a problem with them using the picture. It's the fact that they altered it that I think is wrong.

I'd feel the same if the replaced the flag's stars with M&M's or the Statue of Liberty's torch with an ice cream cone or if they put 'Ol George in a washtub with Donald Duck paddling across the river.

It belongs to different groups differently. It means a specific thing to most WW2 vets, it means a specific thing to most Marines, it means a specific thing to most servicemen. And I'm willing to bet that a lot of people don't like it.

And this not respect.

I would rather they recognize it correctly, not as a ploy by the media. Otherwise, what's the point?

So you're saying that you have less respect for the image because of what Time did?

Somehow, I doubt it.

You are entitled to that opinion, of course. I fail to see the harm or disrespect.

So do any of these bother you?
M+Ms
Consumerism flag
Tootsie Roll flag
Baseball flag
Jesus flag
Statue of Darth
Photoshopped Liberty
Bush Liberty
Christian Liberty
Armed Liberty
Sword and shield Liberty

Personally, I don't have a problem with any of these uses. Some I think are in better taste than others, but I don't see any of them as innappropriate uses of the imagery.

It's not disrespect.

A "ploy"?

The image is being used, and thus is circulating in the public consciousness. I think that's a good thing.

once again. it show's total lack lack of respect for those that fought that war/battle. including my dad and uncle. so laff it up if you want. but over 80,000 plus vets don't think its a bit funny. including many that are just plain outraged. its belongs to them. not us. and not to some marketing moron. just saying. those men are dead. why (*)(*)(*)(*) on their grave????

I signed the petition. their way outta line here.
I have to agree with you here. Although the picture doesn't offend me personally, I would not blame anyone else if they felt offended upon viewing this.
