They are "outsiders" in predominantly Christian parts of the world. As such, they are an easy minority group for the discontented to blame for their problems. Economic rivalry is at the root of all such prejudices. After being forbidden, on religious pretenses (the myth that they killed Jesus) from owning land or doing just about anything else in most of Europe, Jews often became bankers, and when they sometimes became successful bankers they were blamed for their success. Just as economic exploitation formed the basis of anti-Black racism (slavery is free labor), economic rivalry is the basis of modern anti-Semitism.
