It certainly has been overblown by those who have used the threat of one group as justification for attacking others.
And, it is true that the threat isn't one of total civilization-wide destruction.
Al qaeda is inarguably a threat to our security. I will agree, however, that this threat has been exploited by many, many politicians as means for less than honorable ends.
