Although Katie sounds like a nice person (who could hate someone whose interests include movies and ice cream?), I don't quite follow her reasoning -- what do abortion and gay rights have to do with "scientific progress?" These are all questions of morals and ethics. If Katie thinks science should run free without first considering the underlying ethics, she hasn't seen enough movies.
