Raytri: I would describe those countries as similar to the USA when we were very backwards because we had "separate but equal", and "coloreds only", and "whites only" drinking fountains, etc. Those countries are similar to the Apartheid regime in South Africa. I bet they have segregated schools (Muslims/non-Muslims having separate schools, to some degree.)
Try buiding a church in a country where Sharia has much sway.
At
www.faithfreedom.org I read about that women who converted out of Islam recently, in Malaysia, who had custody of her children TAKEN AWAY from her! I can't remember if it's because she's now simply deemed "insane" (what sane person would leave Islam, after all!!), or because of the belief that a converted mother would certainly try to convert her kids out of Islam, and a torturer who lived 1400 years ago said that that is a terrible crime.
But I agree with you that Sharia is not always an all-or-nothing proposition, in reality.
