Of course, one big reason we're in NATO is self-interest. As long as we're a dominant player in European military policy, the likelihood of another world war breaking out in Europe is small. If we just leave and Europe militarizes, we could end up facing a Hitler on steroids that could spark a truly global war -- especially if the militarization is accompanied by an awakening of pan-European nationalism.

A mostly neutered Europe is good for American dominance.
