God(s) were conjured up out of man's deep fear of confronting his own death. Having gods were man's way of creating a powerful negotiating partner. Some results included: the belief in perpetual life (the soul) and affecting natural events through sacrifice or prayer.
Such beliefs are denial and, as such, are mental disorder.
Our species would be vastly better off had we not been so traumatized those many eons ago. It is up to us now to face the fact that we have the responsibilities we've projected on our imaginary fathers.
