America's unhealthy reliance on petroleum is an unsustainable lifestyle. For too long, we've subsidized the conspicuous consumers in our country and their filthy gasoline addictions. Now that they are having to pay a price that is far closer to the actual cost of their behaviors, and it's taking a toll on their pocket books, guess what's happening?
You guessed it. American auto manufacturers are starting to respond with smaller, more fuel efficient cars. And, they are decreasing the production of large, gas-guzzling SUVs.
It's about time for us to get over our obsessive need to drive these huge, status-driven behemoths. Those whose egos demand this should pay the price. All those men who are overcompensating for SOMETHING (cough, cough) can pay for their need to overcompensate while the rest of us start living in ways that are more economically and politically expedient.
Those high prices at the pump have the added benefit of (in the long run) of encouraging us to use less fuel. The biggest benefit to us? We can stop propping up nasty human-rights violating dictatorships and Islamic regimes in the middle east. Let them stew in the mess they've made of their countries, without our oil dollars to keep them in power.
And, let's get our best minds at work on replacing petroleum from the middle east, ENTIRELY, within the next decade.
Then, maybe, REAL change can happen over there, without our soldiers needing to die.
Let the crucifixion from the right begin.

Well said Catz, my sentiments exactly.

In that case, first thing that needs to happen is reduce corporate welfare for the oil industry. It truly is high time the USA got rid of it's oil addiction, as President Bush has said.
