Well it kind of makes sense to have states like Michigan and Florida and Ohio start off the primaries, being states that a) have demographics more closely resembling the rest of America and b) states that tend to swing between Democrats and Republicans on national elections (not that it matters much in primaries).
Iowa's sacred place only really makes sense from a sort of "affirmative action" mindset. It's a low-population farm state and provides a boost for other low-population farm states by being early.

But I think if people are going to question the wisdom of the current order, they should do it in a smarter fashion. By pushing the primaries, Michigan Democrats have only put national candidates in a (*)(*)(*)(*)ed if ya do, (*)(*)(*)(*)ed if ya don't position.
