Default Fair Trade a hit with consumers

From this story:

Since last year, sales of products approved by international fair trade organisation IFAT have increased by nearly 70 percent. The organisation certifies organic products - which include foods, art, toys and jewellery - that are produced by environmentally sustainable means and involve no child labour, under-scale pay or unacceptable working conditions for the workers.

Anyone know if even a single US company complies with the IFAT guidelines?

There are dozens. But they have names like "peacecraft" and "World of Good Inc."

The fairtrade stuff isn't computers or airplanes after all. It's mostly hand made clothing and a lotta ethnic art type stuff. Not exactly what the Wal Mart crowd is looking for even if it was at a good price. I'd guess their biggest demographic would be college students spending daddies money.

Still when Fair trade and Free trade go hand in hand it's all good. Even the Libertarians gotta like that.

I buy gifts and chocolate all the time thru: http://www.agreatergift.org/

A Greater Gift is a program of SERRV International, a nonprofit alternative trade and development organization. Our mission is to promote the social and economic progress of people in developing regions of the world by marketing their products in a just and direct manner.

Our goal is to alleviate poverty and empower low-income people through trade, training and other forms of capacity building as they work to improve their lives. SERRV has worked to assist artisans and farmers for more than 55 years through the following:

Marketing their handcrafts and food products in a just and direct manner.
Educating consumers in the United States about economic justice and other cultures.
Providing development assistance to low-income craftspeople through their community-based organizations.
SERRV International was one of the first alternative trade organizations in the world and was a founding member of the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT).

Not exactly. Although most fairtrade stuff you probably get in the US is that kind of handicraft ethnic art, in the UK and some other European countries a surprising amount of everyday consumer products are fairtrade. You can get most fruit fairtrade, including apples, pineapples, mangos and bananas, as well as coffee, tea, chocolate, honey, and sugar. The UK's biggest sugar supplier, Tate and Lyle, has recently switched all its sugar to fairtrade. Our biggest fairtrade institution here is the Fairtrade Labeling Organisation, though.

Yeah, we do.

If people value "fair" trade enough to voluntarily pay the extra price, then good for them.
