It's good to see that some things never change!
In 1974 I went through basic training in Alameda, CA and SK-"A" school in Petaluma, CA. Some friends and I used to take weekend liberty and go to the Bay area. One of the places we always used to go was a record store in Berkeley called "Rather Ripped Records" - they had the greatest collection of records, both original and bootleg, that I've ever seen.
Anyway, occassionally one of the peace-loving, anti-military denizens of Berzerkley would see us with our military-style buzzcuts, and mutter some snide comment about "warmongers". We'd politely inform them that we weren't warmongers, instead we were the USCG and we rescued fishermen and mariners who were in peril on the high seas, and operated and maintained aids to navigation and lighthouses.
It was a great way to pick up young, impressionable, (read: dumb) hippie chicks...
