Shades of gray? Sheesh, These people are idiots. I can't even tell if they are talking about the opposite sex or everyone. Sounds like you couldn't even give your best friend of the same sex a hug when her moron boyfriend breaks up with her. If the idiot principal doesn't know where to draw the line, she shouldn't be in charge. Surely there must be a grownup around for her to consult.
The schools here generally haven't changed since I was a student. Holding hands was OK, kissing was not.
