Traditionally conservative movement moving to embrace ‘creation care’

The evangelical awakening to climate change is still a work in progress, but as the politically powerful movement becomes more active in environmentalism, political leaders will have to take notice or risk losing their jobs, a prominent evangelical leader said Tuesday.
Since President Bush’s re-election in 2004, a movement called “creation care,” which asserts that Christians are the stewards of God’s creation, has rapidly been been gathering momentum, said the Rev. Richard Cizik, vice president of government relations for the National Association of Evangelicals, or NAE. “What is really happening is that American evangelicals are becoming, well, green, if you will,” Cizik said in an interview with MSNBC-TV’s Joe Scarborough.
The American evangelical community is in the midst of a wrenching shift in thinking on the environment. As recently as this spring, politically influential evangelicals were locked in a showdown over climate change, when 25 conservative evangelical leaders demanded that the NAE fire Cizik for his environmental advocacy.
The association’s refusal — rebuffing such influential conservative figures as James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family; former Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer; and Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council — marked a turning point for green evangelicals, emboldening them to take creation care into the political arena.
“This is going to be an issue which evangelicals are going to look at when they cast their ballots,” Cizik said. “I think it should be on par with all the other issues,” like abortion and same-sex marriage, he said. “When you think about it ... hundreds of millions of people around the globe are already being impacted by climate change.”

Well, guess the religious never had science as a strongsuit. Judging by what's in the scientific journals, human-caused global warming is as controversial as ever. I have no idea how the religions plan on "combatting" warming if it's not human-caused.
The journals are strewn with scientific studies indicating that climate changes aren't going to be even harmful, let alone catastrophic. The sea levels aren't rising at faster rates (in fact, don't even show any correspondence with GHG level rises). Islands aren't "flooding" due to climate change (side note: Tuvalu isn't experiencing trouble due to climate change. It's due to a Japanese pineapple grower's overuse of local fresh water, without replacing the volume. Salt water rushed in to replace it). Hurricanes aren't getting stronger due to climate change (sorry, I don't care how "fight global warming" mischaracterizes the science on their site, hurricanes are showing increased intensity only in the North Atlantic basin, which only accounts for 15% of hurricane activity worldwide). The Thermohaline Circulation isn't slowing down. There are still glaciers worldwide that are advancing.
Basically, this joining by religious groups to this cause is just another political ploy by a cause that's beginning to show many cracks. It's political methods have caused people the world over to question it, and scientists who study it are finding increased doubts as to human causality. All the political methods employed to silence the critics have failed, and once again it appears that science will prevail over politics in the end---when we find that this political "emergency" was so much gullibility on the part of environmentalists allied with an all-too-willing media that fed distortions, half-truths, and outright lies to a public that barely paid attention; and when those misrepresentations became widely known, the public turned its back on the cause.
