Yes, this could be a big deal, no doubt about it.
Secession was what caused the US civil war a few years back. That was a big deal, wasn't it?
Why, indeed, doesn't this situation get more press in the US? My hypothesis is that the typical US news watcher is more interested in sports, entertainment, and local human interest stories, and probably doesn't understand what is going on in Kosovo, or Serbia, or any other far corner of the world. The media is driven by the need for readership or ratings, and so gives the customer what they want.
Giving the customer what they want is the formula for success in any business.
I wonder how much press it would get if California decided to split and become the Bear Flag Republic once again? I'm guessing that would make people sit up and take notice, but maybe not.
If we could gain independence from the US as easily as we once did from Mexico, the Bear Flag Republic could be a fine and prosperous new nation. It wouldn't be worth a civil war, of course, but a peaceful secession would allow us to divorce ourselves from that federal debt, and no longer ever have to put up with a president from Texas.
I wonder if it would work... well, maybe if we can keep people looking the other way. Maybe while American Idol is taking center stage would be a good time.
