Hamas is a large and diverse organisation which has constistently, and largely without state aid, provided superior social, medical and educational services than the corrupt Fatah with all its millions.

Small wonder that the Palestinian people turned to them. Hamas, being such a large organisation, embodies a wide spectrum of views and positions towards Israel but Israeli policies have, and continue, to radicalise Palestinian society and ensure that only the most extreme and militant factions hold sway.

Any signs of moderation by Hamas are firmly snubbed by Israel. How do you expect those more moderate voices within Hamas to gain ascendancy when they only ever return empty-handed?

Gaza is a radical prison camp because Israel wants it that way.
