Oh, please, oh please... you are killing me here...
As a former law enforcement official, I have considered using deadly force twice in my life. Both times the situation was defused by that HUGE gun I had in my hands. I have seen the affect that it has on people. It is the great leveraged negociation tool.
Alarms deter most opportunists. Getting an alarm system costs between $120 to thousands in initial expenses. Add in a $20.00 a month to $400.00 a month monitoring fee, depending on how extensive you want the monitoring to be. But for those of you who don't have the money...
Personally, I would spend $60.00 at radio shack for decent exterior motion detector lights, alarm the door without the monitoring and buy a dog. Then put another $500.00 in a nice Glock. If the fool isn't deterred by the barking and bright light shining in his eyes, then he wont be afraid of anyone being armed inside the house. And that is the time to pull out the 40 cal. Try running out the back of your house with a pack of kids and a hysterical wife in tow. Home invasions historically are stopped very quickly with a well armed, well trained home owner.
I pitty the fool who thinks he's going to kick my door in.
But I have to hand it to the do no harm crowd. The very good recommendations of our initial poster would prevent 98% of thieves trying to break in, while they know someone is home. The last two percent don't even make a move against targets unless they are convinced that you have that golden $200.00 in your wallet to help them get high for the next few hours. Or they are convinced that they have enough firepower and muscle to tear that 200lb safe from your wall. And if that happens, unless you put up a fight, they aren't going to leave any witnesses behind.
I can't even count how many times, note worthy cases of people who were confronted by a home invasion, could have saved their families and friends by having the layered protection I have described.
However, for the .0001% of the cases of multiple attackers with East LA fire-power... Welcome to Pearl Harbor.
The best thing to do there is just lay down, face down and say nothing, do nothing, unless you are asked where the money is. Then give them all they ask for. Don't make any sudden moves. And pray they don't want a murder wrap hanging over their heads.
And for the .00000001% of the victims of home invasions. It pays to completely understand where you and your family members, friends, and visitors stand with God. Because no matter what you do, you will soon be standing before the judge of your life.
