The US was stockpiling nukes well before the Soviets were. They were just following suit, and it was a good thing, because if they didn't, they would have been inviting an invasion from the US.
Now we are in the 21st century. What else do you expect other nations to do, sit back and relax while the US pumps out rail guns, new age stealth, and space weapons. Give me a break!
