Afaik they where (Tupolev 95)""Bear Bombers""(see pic) not jets and while there was a decline in this after the Cold War ended its nothing new.
Russia restarted their long range bomber patrols sometime early this year or last..I forget exactly when...

True, true. The Russian bombers in the incident in the summer were caught and 'escorted' within minutes of entering NATO airspace.
The thing that seperates this is the fact the Bomber's were going towards an Aircraft Carrier, one of America's main weapons.
Quote:
The unnamed officials told news agencies that the Russian bombers had flown over the USS Nimitz in the western Pacific on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Japan has lodged a complaint with Moscow over allegations that a Russian bomber, thought to be one of those involved in the Nimitz fly-over, intruded into Japanese airspace on Saturday.

Dya see what I'm getting at? Flying over an Aircraft Carrier is a big thing alright, it is our most powerful
Power Projection utensil and more expensive than
any other weapon.
This incident links into this thread as well:
US arrests four 'Chinese spies'
And together, I have formed this thread to discuss the issue more:
New Cold War?
These 'incidents' are connected. There seems to be a rising tide of challenge to America, especially now it is militarily overstretched and economically indebted.
There's a change in the air this year. And everyone knows it.
