I think most conservatives consider socialism something of a stepping stone, and consider both to be very bad things.

When you get down to it I think most replublicans (and many conservatives) support a mixed economy. However most regard it as having plenty of not to much socialism mixed in, and so are up in arms against further tilts in that direction.
