The AK is actually a very decent brush gun. And unlike the AR15's .223 (which is illegal to hunt deer with in my state), the 7.62x39mm round cuts through brush and twigs very nicely. I'd use it in any terrain where a pistol or shotgun would also be appropriate. I used an AK the first year I moved to this area, because it was the only large caliber rifle I owned at that time. A friend of mine used a long/heavy barrel AK variant and took down a buck at close to 200 yards.
The (semi-auto) AK's "evil" rep comes from the appearance. Starting 100 yards out, you could run away from a guy with an AK. Start from the same distance and run from a guy with a .300 Weatherby and a fat Leupold sitting on top... you'll just die tired.
