Default McCain-Cheney 2008?: McCain Hints at Running Mate

In a news conference early Tuesday morning, presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain indicated that he would like his running mate to be none other than Miss Mary Cheney, author and second daughter of Dick and Lynne Cheney.
Mary Cheney caused a stir in the Republican party in 2006 when she openly discussed her homosexuality in an interview with Dianne Sawyer, despite her father's and President George Bush's open opposition to gay marriage. She was publicly chastised by gay rights advocates for not speaking out against their position on gay marriage during the 2004 bid for re-election. Last year Mary Cheney gave birth to her first son with long-time partner, Heather Poe.
In his home state of Arizona, McCain made the following statement:
Mary Cheney would be an excellent Vice President. I think she would really reach out to female voters, voters with children, and voters who lead alternative lifestyles. As some of you folks may know, she also used to be employed by Coors, so you know you can have a beer with her.
This statement flies in the face of widespread anticipation that McCain will select a running mate who appeals to evangelical conservatives. McCain's ability to secure the presidency for the Republican party has been in doubt due to his lack of support among the far-right. When asked by a reporter whether he advocates gay marriage, McCain replied:
I advocate lowering the cost of gay marriage. If we just get inflation under control, then I believe that problem will solve itself.
Mary Cheney has yet to publicly comment on McCain's statements.
