Not that it's a bad idea in principle, lord knows it would be a lot more fun to have a charity concert than to have the government just take the money out of my paycheck... but the thing I don't like about it is it seems to deny the fact that these are social problems and responsibilities that everyone needs to contribute to.

When you start saying, "let the charities handle it", you end up throwing the whole responsibility on the backs of those who would work for free and those who would donate to the charity when I believe many of these programs are EVERYONE's responsibility. It would be like if we tried to fund the military through donations... Something tells me it would be difficult to fund the military if the people didn't see how it directly effected them or just didn't want to pay.
