.
Early someone said "Can you prove god doesnt exist?"
The answer is no.
Fortunatly, it is not the job of science to disprove a claim of another. If you make a claim, it YOUR responsibility to prove it. (Don't worry you can't and its ok)
For example if I said: A purple lizard, who can become ethereal at will, and lives in my closet told me that vegtables have feelings and want us to stop eating them.
The responsibility of providing proof is on the person making the claim: It is never on the person denying the claim.
No being that it is Impossible to provide empirical evidence to the existance of any god. This creates a dilemma for the religious.
Their universal answer is basically "God is mysterious. He chooses not to reveal himself! But he talks to me in my head, so you just have to trust me."
On the afterlife or lack there of:
What makes me NOT a hard core aethist. Is that I have no idea what happens when I die. I hope I get to live in something like Heaven.
There is no rational reason to believe there is a heaven, I just don't like the idea of ceasing to exist.
For you fans of Life of Pi, the author suggests that people should choose to believe in religion because it is a more interesting and happy idea than reality.
For those that are religious for this reason, hats off to you.
My probably is that I can't delude myself. I am hoping for heaven, but I understand it is more likely when I die that, thats it.
I think it is possible that death might be like some sort of energy transfer, and perhaps the energy of "me" will just re add itself to the universe. Like the movie Powder, or kind of like a weird take on reincarnation.
Ultimatly, the difference between the non-religious and the religious is:
We say "I don't know"
You say "I know"
What makes it odd, is that you seem to be soo sure of something for which you have no evidence, and rationality would force you to see that what you "know" just happens to be the result of what your parents "knew/know".
You look at worshippers of Zeus and say "morons".
Yet every religion has the exact same amount of evidence to suggest it is "truth". So choosing one over another is IMHO a form of self delusion.

P.S. Glad you liked my quote. I think it sums up Aethism very nicely.
