Ban: No return to status quo

10 April 2008

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says that a return to the status quo in Kosovo is impossible and impractical.

For this reason, he said, it was necessary to find a way out of the predicament that was a “very complicated matter.”

“Kosovo declared its independence unilaterally. In that instance, the UN isn’t planning, nor is it able to begin, considering any political issues,” Ban told journalists after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and president-elect Dmitry Medvedev.

The UN secretary general said that the Serbian government was now planning to hold elections, including local ones, even in Kosovo.

“That’s a very delicate political and legal situation that has repercussions,” he cautioned.

“For that very reason, there have been no instructions from the UN Security Council,” Ban explained.

Commenting on the dispatch of the EU mission to Kosovo, the secretary general said that the key was “how to harmonically coordinate such an activity without any violence,” reports Itar-Tass.
