Anyway I don't see why people look to the free market for a solution for this problem. Because it isn't a "problem" to the free market. If the cheapest way to run your fleet of trucks involves oil from Iran that's what the free market would like to use.
Now if some consumers were willing to pay extra, such as with Hybrids, the free market could step up. If the gulf charges to much for too long though the market might again step up. But as the price of oil is nowhere near their production cost in principle they should keep it down to keep their market.
