Where did I limit things to just criminal activity?

I quoted 5 times more accidental deaths involving fierearms, and almost 5 times more total deaths from firearms in the USA then Australia.

Why would crime go down with the 1996 gun buy back?

Relatively few crimes in Australia involve guns, and the idea of owning a gun as protection against crime is very very rare here. We have never had a "constitutional right" to own a gun, and most people never have. Most in fact (like me) have never even seen one up close, let alone handled one.

Why would the 1996 buy-back have any impact on crime in general?

It has stopped random shootings by loonies though.
