Yes the Tories in England and Wales gave nuLabour a good old-fashioned mid-term local-election spanking; one of the biggest in 40 years.

This kind of thing isn't unusual in UK politics - and the party in power has on many occassions after suffering a disasterous local election defeat, turned the polls around, come the General election time.

The advantage the ruling Party has in the UK is that it sets the date for the General election (within a set timeframe) This allows them to pick the time that best suites them.

So Brown and nuLabour have uptop 2 years before they must call the election, they will be praying for an upturn in World econmics and may have to back down on some tax hikes.

Brown is an old-school christian-socialist son of a Church of Scotland minister.
