As a conservative I believe that the purpose of government is to protect the rights and freedom of the minority no matter what they think. People need to be protected from the tyranny of mob rule. The masses cannot tell me what to think. I have my own opinion that I base on logic defined by the pursuit of my own self interest and by the principle of equality and to do unto others what I would have one do unto myself. Obama rejects these beliefs and thinks that the majority in this country, the "people" if you will, deserve to dictate what the "elites" in society want. A great example is Obama's proposed hike in the capital gains tax. By denying people's right to their property, he not only denies them their freedom, but it is at the bequest of the "common man," that, in pure Rousseauian terms, is the general will, which Obama claims to represent, the essence of a totalitarian dictator. While a hike in the capital gains tax would hurt the economy to the point where the government, and all of the people in the country, would lose money (and he knows it, and admits it,
) he does it "for the purpose of fairness." I think most people in the country would, if properly informed, favor a tax system in which those who contribute the greatest percent of their wealth to investments which stimulate the economy and bring greater wealth to all Americans have a lower tax than those who use more of their money for living expenses.
