Long before anything calle PC existed, phrases people disliked were removed from the vocabulary... especially with politicians and businesses.
I also can't swear loudly in public and expect it to be tolerated.

Sounds to me like most of the "PC" is just what used to be called "common courtesy."
And then there's all the weird stuff like what another poster put up as examples... and that's more what I'd call response to hypersensitivity... usually for the purpose of pleasing customers/clients (yes, even when in schools... Schools compete to keep students and also try way too hard to avoid lawsuits).

PC is mostly a right-wing buzzword to selectively attack social norms and business/public concessions that they don't like (all the while glossing over the ones they do like... like the topic of this thread).
