Just because a state can make some decisions for itself does not make it a country. Taxes are bad, but you will see more of your state taxes actually benefiting you instead of someone hundreds of miles away. The point is that people need to make their own decisions about their own lives, and states make this much more practical than just having one, superpowerful national government.
