Generic religion is Satan's religion, dude. Religion is
always corrupted whenever it is subjected to civil authority. In the case of the law regarding "In God We Trust", the corruption is such that the God Congress wants us to trust is unidentifiable.
It's no wonder that religion is on the decline. The government tells us to trust in God, but doesn't tell us which God we're supposed to trust. Kids are trained to look to Congress for religious advice. However, Congress doesn't tell them which God to trust. Kids lose respect for all religion because they see it as just a tool to be used to achieve political goals.

It can even just be a symbolic interpretation of some abstract concept.

The abstract concept suggested by the "In God We Trust" law is that Congress has authority over religion.

It's empty rhetoric that makes religionists feel comfortable without seeming all that threatening to non theists, so I suppose it's kind of a compromise.

Compromised religion is corrupted religion. Corrupted religion is the devil's religion.
