The fact that people just assume the other person is wrong on principle (whether or not they actually know what the principle is) is just plain ignorance, and comes from both sides of the spectrum. It has a lot to do with how a person is raised, and they will usually just spout out whatever their parents taught them to.

It would be great if we could somehow come up with a fair and unbiased test to make sure that people who vote understand the principles behind the issues, instead of just having people vote for who ever they think will get them the most money. Of course, it would be pretty hard to do that.
