There's been tons of evidence supporting the notion that government schooled children fall behind privately schooled children (on average), as far as education. Those schools are just run better, employ better teachers, and have to prove their value, in order to attract parents to send their kids there. The government just commands school attendance based on districts, so even the absolute WORST government schools (by laws of deduction) still have full enrollment.

My wife attended a religious school and told me that they were never even presented with things like the theory of evolution, big bang theory etc.

She said she learned about them after she was out of school.

It probably just depends on what type of religious school you are attending I suppose. My Mom attended Catholic school growing up and although it clearly leaned towards biblical teachings as fact, alot of the other stuff was at least presented.
