A year is too long - some states have it where you have to declare party affiliation 30 days at the latest before the primary. That would end most of these crossovers.
I knew someone who always did this, the idea being to get the weakest Democrat of all nominated and then he'd vote against him in the general election. It was a closed primary system, so he's a registered Democrat who keeps getting invited to local conventions and bugged for money by them.

It's really not that hard to cause chaos within their party, they don't ever have to unite totally.
