The breathing and relaxation techniques will work if you practice. That muscle is going to work whether you relax or not. If you breathe right and relax, you'll give it the nutrients and oxygen it needs. If you don't, I assume it would be something like having a very large charley horse.
Never listen to anyone talk about how bad it is. They probably just did it wrong.
