Well the problem is that "idiots" (idiot can be very subjective in and of itself, there are differing levels of ignorance or lacking common sense) can vote the same as everyone else. For that reason, people need to be patient with "idiots" and try and educate and/or persuade them. It would be wrong to simply kill off or subjugate or enslave everyone you don't agree with because that only increases the risks of civil instability.
Religion is probably the largest piece of B.S. in the history of the human race, but science is still relatively new considering the hundreds of thousands of years it took for us to evolve to this point. It might be quite unreasonable to expect everyone to change "overnight" (or a few hundred years even). Give it time. People will come around even if it takes a thousand years or so.
