Yeah, but low energy prices at least kept food prices low so they can eat.
They can't even do that now.
Keep in mind that almost all the people who live "on the brink of abject poverty" as you say, live in areas of the world where the leaders take everything for themselves. You don't see people in the U.S. or even in Europe living in those kinds of conditions.
