Default Does the government have a right to draft soldiers?

In this thread I wanted to discuss the philosophical and legal justification (or lack thereof) for a military draft. I know when it comes down to it, the government will draft people regardless. They just do what they want with the heavy hand of power. But is there any real justification for it, or is it purely an abuse of power?

I will kick off the subject thusly:

Quote:
U.S. Constitution Amendment 13, section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
