It is also a much offered argument offered in defence of Republican illegalities, crimes, lies, fraud, corruption of the Constitution; etc that "the Democrats were also guilty of this".

WAIT!! One second.

Think for a moment how these arguments sound outside our borders.

Here we are, vigorously debating for all of the rest of the world to see, that BOTH major political parties are guilty of the same illegalities / lies / crimes / corruptions etc.

We are holding up a big placard reading "Don't worry planet earth - the other side is just as bad - just about our entire country is capable of the same ethical bancrupsy."
