Gay people aren't asking for a religious ceremony, they just want the same rights and freedoms as straight people.

For example, When straight people get married by a judge it is not a religious ceremony but a civil union. Shouldn't gay people be entitled to the same thing as it is technically a public union to finalize a legally binding contract'?
