Meh. They were the band that made underground thrash metal mainstream. That is their contribution. The more mainstream they became, the more they sucked... and then they got even worse when they tried to be metal again! (St. Anger did achieve what its title suggests... It angered me).
Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Metal Church, Testament, and a whole lot of bands that no one remembers were their equals... just not as commercially motivated and thus they rode on Metallica's wave into the mainstream.

I give Metallica credit for opening that door.
They get many negative points because Ulrich is one of the worse metal drummers EVER!!!

They did set the "rocker" scene and balance out the Beatles vile "mod" scene. They are catchy. But musical geniuses? Not by any means.
Again they are a band more noteworthy for commercial skills than musical ability.

Led Zeppelin was awesome and important. In this case the overrated status is entirely because the hype is so pervasive.
