Sorry, they tried but counldn't. You need a good unbiased Middle East book. Try The one by Robert Fisk.

Yes, they did control Lebanon for 18 years, but couldn't hang on (watch this space in Afghanistan). Israel, and its locally recruited militia, the SLA, had their asses kicked, militarily, by Hezbollah. That is the MAIN reason why Israel withdrew in 2000. It is the ONLY time that Israel was defeated by an Arab organization. Naturally a huge amount of spin is put on it to make it appear otherwise, just like with Vietnam.

To this day the greatest annoyance to Israel is Hezbollah's military ability and discipline.

The change in military fortunes came about because of the availability of better weapons to Hezbollah, including American-made wire-guided TOW anti-tank missiles, which have a longer range and more powerful payload. LOL - ironically these weapons had been delivered to Iran by Israel itself during the so-called Irangate scandal in the 1980's.

So your dream was tried by Israel, but it failed. The freedom fighters had gained their goal. Pity Hezbollah muddied their name in 2006.
