Yes, they did control Lebanon for 18 years, but couldn't hang on (watch this space in Afghanistan). The change in military fortunes came about because of the availability of better weapons to Hezbollah, including American-made wire-guided TOW anti-tank missiles, which have a longer range and more powerful payload.
