Gay people aren't asking for a religious ceremony, they just want the same rights and freedoms as straight people.
For example, When straight people get married by a judge it is not a religious ceremony but a civil union. Shouldn't gay people be entitled to the same thing as it is technically a public union to finalize a legally binding contract'?

Civil unions were discussed in Mass as an alternative and GLAD (and a host of other groups) were against it under the guise that it would cause a permanent second class. Even if those same exact rights were granted. For many it is more than just looking for those rights.
